”I long to be with the stars in the night sky,” she confessed to me
As she tilted her head back and breathed life into her nostrils
“I can smell them, taste them.”
I can too, I confide
The red glitter permeates through me, prickling my tongue, giving life to blood
I know the touch of heaven like my father’s hot whiskey breath
And the sound of leather dragging across hardwood
My shy fingers run through the dirt, sliding smoothly on the dark velvet ground
“What are we doing down here?” she laughs
The stars sing, the blare of holy trumpets mock our disguise
Our pink smoke reaches to them as sweetly
As the taste of skin
But the voice I heard calling from heaven was a whisper to the voice I heard in hell
The dearest devil writes the most colorful novels amidst our distractions
And so here we sit
Dumbfounded to the call of the Earth when our place has always been in the sky.
”Do you believe in God?” She wants to know
I believe in a lot of things
I believe pleasure exists in pain
Just like sugar is not always sweet
I believe that the happiest flowers bloom in winter and die in spring
I believe my mother’s hug is a blessing and my father’s hand is an instrument
He plays the drums while I dance spastically
Screaming with life
My star-crossed lover endures me
Her soft sound resonates like rippling pools of honey
Stunning, spellbinding, and slaying sheepish becoming
I drink, take her hand confidently, and jump to the evening’s gleam
The Earth shatters below us as we disappear
Blood and air
Dust is returned to its luminous starlight flesh
— And the Red Flash spurns the broken world we left behind
